Princess of Pugness: Short-nosed Breed Summer Care

pugprincess.jpg

Sophie, Princess of Pugness is chauffeured in her royal chariot through lush, tropical hillsides on the island of Maui by my good friends, Jane and Scott. Scott says the stroller is ideal for longer walks as it soothes Sophie’s 14-year old arthritic hips and lower back and keeps her cool on hot summer days. Like many short-nosed dogs, Sophie is prone to overheating. Two ways dogs regulate their temperature is by panting and taking in air through their nostrils. Dogs with longer muzzles cool down quickly by drawing air over the large surface area of the tongue, but shorter nosed dogs cannot do this as efficiently. Also, they are more likely to have narrowed nostrils making inhaling more difficult. Be mindful of exercising flat-faced dogs too much in hot weather. It may be another way to spoil your dog yet dog strollers can keep your pup safe, healthy and happy.

This stroller may not be the cheapest on the market, but it’s the most inclusive in terms of size. The model is great for larger senior or short-nose breeds. It also has humane ergonomics in mind with a storage tray, cup holder and adjustable push handles.
